Vintage Mother’s Day Gifts

The mother of all holidays, Vintage Mother’s Day is a time to show appreciation and love for all the mothers out there. From flowers to gifts there are many ways to honor the special ladies in our lives.

Anna Jarvis is credited with being the woman who first promoted the idea of Mother’s Day. Her mother was the inspiration for her to start a movement of honoring mothers. In 1907 she sent a basket of 500 white carnations to her church in Grafton, West Virginia where she taught sunday school. She chose the carnation because it was her mother’s favorite flower and she wanted to honor her. The tradition of sending carnations on Mother’s Day continues to this day.

Roses are another traditional flower for Mother’s Day. The rose has long been associated with mythological and religious related maternal figures throughout both ancient and modern times. From the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ’s mother, the rose has come to symbolize a Mother’s love.
